The Institut für Raumexperimente e.V. developed out of the Institut für Raumexperimente (Institute for Spatial Experiments), Berlin University of the Arts. Since January 2015, the Institut für Raumexperimente e.V., a non-profit registered association, maintains the institute’s comprehensive online archive and continues to support artistic research and education.

From 2009 to 2014 the Institute for Spatial Experiments was affiliated with the Berlin University of the Arts and served as an experimental education and research project, led by founding director Olafur Eliasson together with co-directors Christina Werner and Eric Ellingsen. It was supported by the Senate Department of Education, Youth and Science of the State of Berlin as part of its programme of excellence Wissen schafft Zukunft (Knowledge Creates the Future), as well as by the Einstein Foundation Berlin.
